My favorite genre... which could broadly include bands such as Elder, Sleep, Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Mars Red Sky, FuManchu, Monster Magnet, Black_Sabbath, Baroness, Mastodon, Electric Wizard, Colour Haze, and The Sword.

Sleep is currently on tour. If they haven't hit your town yet, BUY TICKETS. It will likely be the heaviest experience of your life.

Just as an exercise in education, does anyone else have significant bands that could be added to my genre list?

Ghost definitely counts. They have heavy doom and Sabbath influences. They just pair that with extremely clean singing and more traditional rock/pop vocal hooks.

Hmm I feel like there are a lot of darker synthwave albums you would like Shatner. Most are classically inspired with a bit of metal influence. You like instrumentals so it isn't a far leap.

I like synthwave, but for a completely different reason. If you are talking dark, heavy music... I think I want actual analog instruments. My genre favorites are Mastodon and Elder, and you just can't do what they do with synths. So while I like synthwave, I think the dark/heavy stuff wouldn't scratch my specific itch.

Fact: Bongripper's album "Satan Worshipping Doom" has four songs, and they are "Hail", "Satan", "Worship", "Doom".

oh fuck yes! Worship the Riff!

Cough are out of VA, and have a new album out this year. Above is my favorite track of theirs.

Roadsaw are more pure stoner rock than metal, but the above is classic

These bands make the best covers, IMO:

Orange Goblin doing ZZ Top's "Just Got Paid"

I'm not sure if Ghost truly fits in here. They're definitely a retro sort of act, maybe like a cross between Black Sabbath and King Diamond? I dunno...

This is my favorite Ghost song :D

Saw Orange Goblin with the above band in 2013.

Sabbath weren't bad when they turned into just another 80s metal band.

Who the fuck is that singer?

This just doesn't seem like Sabbath at all to me though. It's not "doom" enough for one thing... and it just doesn't feel like Sabbath if it doesn't feature Ozzy or Ronnie.

Speaking of that... guess what's on the new Metallica album..
